So, as some of you know, I suffer from a weak stomach on long runs. I’ve tried just about every remedy out there with only varying success. I get a little bit of relief from ginger gum, but not very much.
I’ve tried many, many fueling and hydration options with limited success.
I’m interested, however, in trying something radically different. I came across this article which suggests that isopropyl alcohol can be used as a nausea cure.
I just happen to have a few hundred alcohol wipes in small packets that I use for cleaning my eyeglasses and computer monitors.
After trying them a few times at Squaw Peak last weekend, I can say that the results are mixed.
They definitely work in the short-run. I noticed that I felt immediately better right after taking the first sniff. It’s actually pretty crazy. I was very surprised by how quickly the nausea died down.
Unsurprisingly, however, the effects are short-lived. Each time, I was back to feeling unwell after a few minutes.
To make a long-story short, isopropyl alcohol isn’t going to magically fix mistakes that you’re making with hydration or nutrition and it certainly won’t bring you back from the dead.
It will, however, give you a few minutes of near-instant relief and for some people, that might be all they need to get their heart rate back down and relaxed.
As always, try this stuff at your own risk. I have no medical training and for all I know, doing this can mess up your lungs, your heart, your brain and god knows what else. I certainly wouldn’t make a habit of it — I can tell you that much.
